The School of Psychology offers a number of degree options for students wanting training in applied clinical practice:
The Masters program is a two year full time or four year part time qualification leading to a Masters of Clinical Psychology degree. This qualification involves three semesters of applied coursework and of clinical placements and one semester of thesis work.
The Masters of Clinical Psychology degree may be combined with the three year research PhD degree for those wishing to pursue an academic clinical psychology career. The combined coursework PhD programs are no longer on offer, but the combination of the Masters of Clinical Psychology degree with a research PhD offers the same career options with the bonus of the award of both degrees.
Neither the Masters of Clinical Psychology nor the Masters + PhD qualification offer immediate eligibility to the Clinical College of the APS (see the Membership pages on the APS site for details).
The Doctoral program is a three year full time or six year part time qualification leading to a Doctor of Psychology degree. This qualification involves four semesters of applied coursework and clinical placements and two semesters of thesis work. Students may pursue the Doctor of Psychology degree in the following areas:
Completion of any of these degrees offers the graduate full membership in the Clinical College, as well as relevant other colleges according to the degree obtained. Each of the specialist degrees gives students the chance to pursue high-level coursework in these areas, as well as access to specialist training placement sites in the community. The thesis for the Doctor of Psychology degrees is the equivalent of a Research Master's degree in scope.
